Night Running: How James Escaped with the Help of His Faithful Dog by 
Elisa Carbone, illustrated by E. B. Lewis. Knopf, 2008. 978-0-375-82247-6

The true story of slave James Smith, uncovered when Carbone was 
researching her novel Stealing Freedom, is told in an author's note 
at the end of this emotionally charged fictionalized version.  When 
James decides to escape slavery on Master Graham's farm, he knows he 
must leave his noisy dog Zeus behind.  But Zeus is determined to 
escape with James and proves to be a worthy companion, saving him 
from slave-catchers and their dogs and the deep waters of the Ohio 
River that try to drown the boy before he reaches the free shores of 
Ohio.  Lewis's paintings shine with tension and moonlight in a story 
of human and canine courage. Pair this book with Barefoot by Pamela 
Duncan Edwards and Henry Cole (HarperCollins, 1997) for another tale 
of an escaped slave aided by animals. Suggested ages: 7-10
