What the Rat Told Me: A Legend of the Chinese Zodiac by Marie Sellers, Catherine Louis, and Wang Fei, author, illustrator, and calligrapher. NorthSouth, 2008. 978-0-7358-2220-7 This stunningly illustrated porquoi tale is based on a Buddhist legend that dates back to the Han Dynasty and tells the story of how the twelve animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig) came to visit the Great Emperor of Heaven on the Jade Mountain and become the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac. It also reveals the cat and the rat, who used to be the best of friends, are enemies now for all eternity. The outstanding linoleum prints that illustrate each page will tempt young artists to make prints of their own. And few will be able to resist trying their hands at the calligraphic symbols for each animal. This is a book with a dozen or more curriculum uses from art to Chinese history, to legends and porquoi tales.
