I'm putting together a proposal in hopes of getting some funding for my journalism
classes in my new district. I'm hoping if I can make a stronger case for how
journalism builds character, helps students to better in school and post-secondary;
how a thriving newspaper can help build a stronger sense of community at school and
in the actual community, etc. I can scrape together enough funds to publish a hard
copy paper each month. I have the Jack Dvorak study on file, which is great data
about how journalism students do better academically. I have some excellent
first-hand anecdotal evidence from my teaching experiences in Missouri.

Can you help point me in the direction of more studies, research, scholarly support
- especially in terms of character education in journalism?

(We have had a journalism class off and on for many years - some years they work on
actual reporting and photography, while other years they basically help the
librarian shelve books. We're in a fairly isolated, rural community with 100% of
our students in the free and reduced lunch program, and only five offerings for
electives - shop, Mariachi, P.E., Ag. and journalism.)

Any help you can offer would be welcome. Please respond to me off-list:

I will post a hit if there is enough interest.
