The national board process is a 3 year process that can be completed in 1
year.  What that means is that if you don't certify the first year you
have 2 additional tries.  You can bank what you score high on and then
re-take what you need to.  TAKE ONE will give you a taste of the process
without requiring you to complete all 4 portfolio entries and the
assessment center exercises in a year.  The time you spend is about equal
to doinf a master's degree in a year.  In my district we have support
groups and free classes.  You can also do a master's at the same time but
I would not recommend that unless you have no life or hobbies outside of
school.  It is a rewarding achievement that has financial rewards in some
states.  I receive 5% additional for my 10 years of certification in
Nevada.  Your TAKE ONE score can be banked toward your completed
certification.
