RE: data bases for new library
I couldn't do without EBSCOHost by EBSCO. We purchase through a private
school consortium but I'm sure you can contact them at
http://www.ebscohost.com/

Another can't do without is Opposing Viewpoints and Student Resource
Center Bronze both by InfoTrac at http://infotrac.thomsonlearning.com/

Good luck with your new library. How exciting is that!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We use Ebsco, Grolier Online, Newsbank, SIRS,  and Student Resource
Center Gold.  I will definitely add Chronicle Guidance Career Files for
next year (It's only $50 with the print subscriptions that we already
have.)  and hope to add Facts on File (about ½ of their databases).
Ebsco and the Grolier Online are my favorites.  Grolier includes at
least 5 sets of encyclopedias (including Americana), selected web links
and selected periodical links + dictionary and atlas just a click away.
It's really fun to teach students to use this.

I 've looked on other school's websites and found ideas, too.

Hope this helps!

Must haves:

Facts on File Bloom's Literary Reference Online, Modern World History
Online, ProQuest's eLibrary Science and History Study Center, World Book
Online, and the online version of the OED.  We also have Thomson's
Encyclopedia of World Biography, which is an e-book, and I find it very
useful.

Our school has found Opposing Viewpoints from Cengage/Gale to be very valuable for
research projects.  It provides a huge amount of information and home access for a
very reasonable price I think.
Our state provides access to SIRS Knowledge Source as well as EBSCO for all school
libraries, but if they didn’t I’d certainly purchase one or both if funding
allowed.
Good luck.

You should look at these on trial.  ABC-CLIO and Facts On File social science can
be redundant--FOF Science and Today's Science are good.

ABC-CLIO DATABASES--social sciences
FACTS ON FILE DATABASES--social sciences & science
OXFORD ART DATABASE
OXFORD MUSIC DATABASE
CQ RESEARCHER 7 GLOBAL RESEARCHER--current issues
MCGRAW-HILL ACCESS SCIENCE

The two MAGAZINE/NEWSPAPER DATABASES: GALE INFOTRAC (separate mag and newspaper
databases) & EBSCO MAS ULTRA (high school) & EBSCO NEWSPAPER are good

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our students use the Gale Group and Wilson Web on a regular basis. You should be
able to find out how to subscribe and what the cost is by going to their websites.
Wilson Web is under the H.W. Wilson company and the other one should be found under
Gale Group.

If money were no object:

Opposing Viewpoints
InfoTrac Student Edition

Other than the ones the state provides I love
    Gale's _Opposing Viewpoints_
        Rosen's _Teen Health and Wellness_
    _Career Cruising_
