The Department of Library Science of Sam Houston State University is
saddened to report the passing of Dr. Janelle Paris. Jan retired from the
department in 1991 following 25 years of service. Dr. Paris taught the
children's literature classes in the graduate MLS program. However, Jan
will best be remembered for her two legacies. Jan was the driving force
behind the Texas Bluebonnet Award. Dr. Paris helped establish the concepts,
aims, and purposes of the award program. She even ran the first few years
of the program before it came under the auspices of the Texas Library
Association. Jan also initiated the annual conference celebrating
literature for children. This conference, combined with the YA literature
conference is in its 28th year. Speakers have included Newbery and
Caldecott honorees, Texas authors, and educators from the area. Those who
had the good fortune to know Jan or to have her for a class all understood
her commitment to Texas children and to books. Her efforts to motivate
children to read continues in the legacy of the TBA and the annual
literature conference sponsored by the Department of Library Science. A
memorial service will be held for Dr. Paris at a later date in Huntsville. For
those desiring, contributions in memory of Dr. Janelle Paris may be directed
to University Advancement, Box 2537, Huntsville, TX 77341 with the notation
“Paris Scholarship.”
