I posted the following "comment" in the comment section of the article in the Denver Post. I thought I would share it here in the discussion. "New computer catalogs give children many ways to find what they are looking for. They are child friendly, have pictures, give a summary of the book, reading level, if it is one in a series, other books by the same author, if it is available in the library and if it isn't what library they can borrow it from, etc. Many libraries have "browsing" bins where young users can flip through the books to find one that looks interesting to them. "All non-fiction books about horses should be together." Once a librarian helps them to find the horse books or teaches them to use the catalog, they browse for the one that best fits their information need or find the exact book they are looking for. If they know that fiction books are filed by the author's last name, they can quickly find books on the shelf...even in Kindergarten. Popular authors or series can be put on display using the DDS system. I have always found it difficult to find any exact book that I wanted in a book store and the clerk has had to look it up...guess where...a catalog on their computer! I have found that it is usually the adults that come in and say...where are the horse books or where can I find a book by Beverly Cleary? It isn't "dumbing" down but the art of having a good librarian in school, public or private libraries." We've had this discussion before. Some schools do it because of AR and RC. Some public libraries because they put books into "themes" and age groups. Our public library tends to do the latter and I spend way too much time hunting from place to place for a book so now I just look the book up online and put a reserve on it...it's waiting at the desk for me. I loathe wasting time; it drives me crazy. lm Lynette (LYNN) Mitchell Library Media Specialist Crystal River High School 1205 NE 8th Ave. Crystal River, Florida 34428 mitchelll@citrus.k12.fl.us 352-795-4641 ext: 248 352-795-4519 FAX Currently reading: The Graceling by Kristen Cashore Just finished: Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson What about you? -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
