In my school I had a little poppet with severe learning difficulties but she loved
me and the
library so it was my aim to have that place so well labelled that Molly would be
able to become as
independent as she could be. One of the most effective things I did was to
identify the really
popular non fiction areas (K-6) and I bought cheap, lightweight toys that matched
these. I strung
them together with fishing line and then hung them above the appropriate location
on the shelves.
The 'mobile' also had the Dewey number and subject. So when Molly went looking for
her beloved
elephants or recipes she just had to look for the mobile that matched.

In the countries section I hung flags and they always attracted attention. Kids
love flags.
