The general consensus seems to be that my teacher is mixed up and such a poem probably does not exist, at least not one written by Thoreau. She may have been thinking about "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Hemingway, which is not only by a completely different author, but is a short story instead of a poem. Thanks again to all those who responded. Original post: One of my teachers has asked me for help in finding a poem written by Thoreau about Mount Kilimanjaro. I have done some searching, but come up empty. If anyone knows the poem she's talking about, I'd appreciate some information. Responses: Was that Hemingway? ___________________________________ I found this page that has all of Thoreau's poems and there is no Kilimanjaro! Perhaps your teacher has the poet wrong. http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/transcendentalism/authors/thoreau/thoreaupoems.html ___________________________________ The only Kilimanjaro/literature reference I can think of is Hemingway's short story, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." I'd be very surprised to hear that Thoreau wrote anything about Kilimanjaro, as his focus was Walden Pond (Massachusetts) and its environs. He did write two poems, neither of which was critically successful, titled "The Mountains in the Horizon," and "To the Mountains," which were about mountains in New England. I did look in all my Thoreau references, both online and in print, and I could find no reference to Kilimanjaro. Here's a link to what he did write: http://www.galenet.com/servlet/LitIndex/hits?r=d&origSearch=true&o=DocTitle&n=10&l=12&c=1&secondary=false&u=LitIndex&t=KW&s=1&NA=thoreau&OP=full ____________________________________ I'm going to go out on a limb and say such a poem does not exist. As far as I know, Thoreau never went to Africa and the timing is kind of off. The British weren't in Kenya until the 1880's-1890's which is after Thoreau's death. Before that the Germans were there, but I don't think it was a place that Americans were going. I looked up Thoreau quickly and it looks like a trip toQuebec might be his only trip out of the U.S. Sarah Loch Librarian Valley Park Alternative School 4510 Bawell Street Baton Rouge, LA 70808 225-926-9765 x. 229 SLoch@ebrpss.k12.la.us See what I'm reading here: http://www.shelfari.com/o1516824204/shelf#firstBook=0&list=6&sort=dateadded -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
