I have been reading to students the chapter from Robert McCloskey's, Homer Price entitled "The Case of the Sensational Scent" where Homer and his pet skunk, Aroma, apprehend 4 bank robbers. One of the students pointed out today that in the illustration where the bank robbers all share the same bed in order to keep anyone from absconding with their stolen suitcase of money, there are 5 bank robbers pictured. Since McCloskey was both the author and illustrator of this now, 66 year old book, does anyone know why he would have drawn 5 instead of 4 robbers? I am hoping that someone can help me answer this for my students. Had it been another illustrator I would have assumed that the illustrator had not really read the text.
