This oft-discussed mistake in the book is simply an error on 
McCloskey's part that was not corrected early on (I believe later 
printings may have corrected that picture).  Similar to the mistake 
that Ludwig Bemelman's made in the first Madeline book when Madeline 
is in the hospital but the scene at the dinner table shows all the 
girls -- without one missing.
