This topic of discussion reminded me of a website I've come across.  If 
you're looking for a social networking type of site that is specifically 
geared to younger students you could also take a look at imbee: 
http://www.imbee.com/  It is a social networking site that is specifically 
geared towards kids and tweens.  There's also an option for teachers to 
create a social network for their students.
