You actually go to student graduation parties? I am stunned.

I am sorry but I agree with the first poster -- you are lucky that you have not had
any problems so far.
I wish you luck... because their will be a parent at some point who takes offense
and believe me until you sit in a meeting with irate parents, lawyers, law
enforcement and the supt. you have not seen anything.

Anything that is not an official district sanctioned communication tool is asking
for trouble.

While I understand your hesitation, I don't feel that I am in any danger of
being charged with any offense as I am not committing any offense. I don't
post things that I wouldn't want anyone to see. I am merely choosing to be
involved with the students and be a part of their lives, which they dearly
appreciate. I don't feel that this is, as one post said, hanging out with
them. If that were the case, I guess I shouldn't go to their graduation
parties either. But I get invited to many of them, and I go to as many as I can.
I also have a bulletin board full of senior pictures that have been given to me.
The students appreciate that I take an interest in them. I was just at a
conference last week (Michigan Computer Users in Education) where I heard a lot
of talk about Facebook, et. al. and I never heard a negative comment. What I did
hear is that kids are digital natives while most of us are digital immigrants.
We can't teach them until we can reach them, and as long as we have a
digital accent we are impeded.

I've waited so long to comment on this subject because I too am on the
fence about "connecting" with students on a social website. However, I
think we would all be wise to take a wait and see attitude because I think
it's just a matter of time before some educator will be charged with an
offense (guilty or not) through a Facebook type of contact.

I originally got started with FB because my son, who had just gone off to
college, asked me to. I was absolutely thrilled that he wanted to keep in touch
with me and I jumped at the chance to keep up with what was going on with him.
Some of his friends then asked to friend me and then their parents. In much the
same way, when students want to friend me, I feel complimented that they wish to
share their lives with me. They enjoy it when I wish them a happy birthday or
make a comment about how nice they look in their prom pictures. I do these same
kinds of things in person at school too. It's just another way of connecting
with them.
