Duh.

The Bible is a significant piece of world literature, and as such anyone is welcome
to read it anywhere. Besides, if it's an assigned text (and how can it not be with
a Bible Lit class?) there's some real problem with telling students not to read it.

When I taught "Grapes of Wrath" it was an important part of my supplemental reading.

Seems like a few people need to know that "Freedom of Religion" needn't include
"Freedom FROM Religion."

When my students ask, I explain it thus:
"You are welcome to pray in my classroom.
(In fact--seeing some of your grades, you might consider it.)
But I am not welcome to force you to pray."

I don't know--but I'd consider it an infringement on my federal rights to be told
NOT to read ANY book quietly to myself. Were I standing on cafeteria tables
prosthetizing, I'd feel differently.

"Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just
a natural part of the way the world works. Anything that's invented between when
you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can
probably get a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against
the natural order of things."-Douglas Adams

We have a Bible Lit class at our school. Several of the students in the
class have been bringing their bibles and reading during the day (as
well as others that I see regularly). It appears they are only reading
for their own knowledge or for the class. They have been told by several
staff members that they are not allowed to do this on school campus.

I have my thoughts on this as well as information that I have on file
but I just want to get some feedback from others on this issue.
