While it does not claim to be the first - created in the late 1990s - the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature in Abilene, Texas, is another place that houses and honors wonderful artwork. The web site, http://www.nccil.org/index.htm, has more information. If you are ever in west Texas, think about visiting. Katherine Goodnight-Click, Librarian J. W. Long Elementary School Terrell, Texas goodnigk@terrell.ednet10.net 972-563-1448, ext. 4059 "To read a book for the first time is to make an acquaintance with a new friend; to read it for a second time is to meet an old one." ~Chinese Saying >>> edward nizalowski <enizalowski@NVCS.STIER.ORG> 3/26/2009 12:21 PM >>> I was sent a message by someone from Ohio who said that the first picture book art museum was actually the Mazza Museum established on the campus of the University of Findlay located in Findlay, Ohio. The Mazza Museum goes back to 1982 and Eric Carle's was opened to the public in 2002. The websites of both museums claim to be the first: The University of Findlay website: http://www.findlay.edu/offices/resources/mazza/default.htm "The Mazza Museum: International Art from Picture Books is the world's first and largest teaching museum devoted to literacy and the art of children's picture books. Founded in 1982, the Mazza Museum now contains more than 3,000 original artworks." The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art website: http://www.picturebookart.org/Home "Together with his wife Barbara, Eric Carle, the renowned author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art as the first full-scale museum in this country devoted to national and international picture book art, conceived and built with the aim of celebrating the art we know first." Maybe we need to have more definition of the phrase "first full-scale museum". Ed Nizalowski, SMS Newark Valley High School Newark Valley, NY enizalowski@nvcs.stier.org "It takes honeybees ten million foraging trips to gather enough nectar to make one pound of honey."
