The sad part is -- even if some places really care
things are so bad - they have no choice

I have seen some supt's . about reduced to tears -- over the hard decisions they
are having to make.

and the sad thing is -- some people in the public really don't care at all about
education let alone libraries

A sad state --

and I read about all of the these big executives getting these wild salaries
heck - some of those salaries could about fund some small school districts for a
year or more

and professional athletes -- I guess the list could go on
but until people value education --
Particularly public education --
I think we will see more cuts --

I hope I am wrong --
but even with schools in such bad shape
some legislators are still pushing charter schools and vouchers which takes even
more money away from public schools.

Now before someone comes after me -- I am not against private schools - but I don't
think taxpayer money should go them or charter schools unless they have to meet the
same testing criteria and laws we do.

We don't get to pick and choose our clientele.

Getting the kidsto speak for you was essentially the core of Ross Todd's
Ohio study--see http://www.oelma.org/studentlearning/

I would second that, but also add -- get the kids to speak for you!
They can be very eloquent in their support and, while my school district
board and administration don't necessarily listen to teachers, they do
like to think they have the kid's interests at heart. So pull those
heart strings!

Also IMHO

I found out 3 weeks ago I will have a job next year at my school. I
really
think that when it comes to advocating for schools:
ALA hasn't succeeded.
WE alone can't do it.
Studies and testimony can't do it.
So what works?
Besides doing your best and supporting learning and making sure you are
visible in that capacity?
Parents and taxpayers - network them, befriend them, include them,
organize
them - and plan ahead because many of us will need them.
If you can show up with a big petition or 200 parents at a school board
meeting, you may get results.
Just because WE value ourselves doesn't mean that administrators will
support us in this economy. Oh and also, read what Doug Johnson says on
this
and every subject....
IMHO (tep),
Melissa
