Hello,
Many requested information as to the 5th grade wiki project. Basically,
once my principal saw it being used for chat, he requested the project be
shut down. There were rules and procedures in place in the event the wiki
was abused. Students knew that once their state projects were assigned,
they would be using the site exclusively for showcasing their research.
While this project has been aborted, I am looking at alternative sites
used in our high school where posts are pre-approved. All is not lost,
these are the skills taught up to site closing:
Internet safety & responsibility.
Intro. to website evalutation.
Citation & the Internet.
The role of Wikis.
Microsoft Word editing skills.
Logging in, editing and saving.
Inserting links.
Skills I didn't teach but kids picked up on and loved:
New methods of self expression & creative writing. I learned a lot about
many kids that I would not have known without reading their pages, there
was some very touching prose & poetry that I would not have thought of
some of the behaviorally challenged kids.
Many kids were very tech savy and adventurous and began to create some
great clip art, pics. and links to other sites.
I know there will be many disappointed kids when they discover the site
has been shut down. Thank you for your past advice.
