I just finished reading The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had by Kristin Levine (Putnam, 2009), and I think this novel is an excellent choice. (I am hoping it will "sell" well with the 5th-8th grade crowd.) The setting is 1917 Alabama, and the theme of Southern race relations is handled realistically and sensitively, with a touch of humor. This first novel makes Levine an author to watch!
