Many of the students in your schools who fail to return their books or complain that they "didn't check them out," grow up to be college students (and even older adults) who seem to replay the same excuse when they visit the academic library!! While there ARE some books that are returned and aren't correctly checked in by our student workers, the majority of lost or missing books are just never returned by lazy or scatter-brained library patrons. Generally the bursar's bill is the biggest prompt to get them to return them to us (the students are charged the cost of the book plus a $20 processing fee--- even if they return the book and are refunded the replacement cost, we still charge the processing fee ----which can be painful!!) One student recently began returning about 40 overdue books from last semester when she received a bursar's bill for over $900. When she returned the books, she still had a balance of over $400 (which I reduced). However, when I searched her "history" of library usage, I discovered that she had borrowed over 200 books during the past year and had "lost" or had overdue fines for 117 of them. You have to wonder how long these individuals were allowed to get away with not taking responsibility for their library privileges as children or young adults? I don't advocate being a "library meanie"...but I DO hope that school librarians (and administrators) continue to require their students to take responsibility for the library materials that they borrow and / or pay for their lost materials. The trend of irresponsible behavior by students will continue throughout college and adulthood if we do not address this problem at the K-12 levels. Keep up the good work and know that we are also trying to *teach (and reteach) social responsibility* even at the academic levels. ~Shonda -- Shonda Brisco Assistant Professor / Curriculum Materials Librarian Mary L. I work in a high school where the district charges NO fines for overdue materials. The student who returns a book over the sumnmer is charged the replacement price for the item. This is the first year for me in this district, and I am struggling with this policy. I believe a student will not learn accountability and/or responsibility if there are no consequences for poor behavior. I am very interested in hearing from other library/media specialists. Do you charge daily fines for late materials? If so, how much is the fine? Do you think charging fines reduces the quantity of overdues? I will be happy to post a hit. I've got some great news, and I would appreiciate it so much if you would send it out over your Texas State Library connection like you did after I was there. As of Monday, I am now part of the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Artist Roster (through the Indigenous Cultures Institute). This means that for schools, libraries, museums, etc. (non-profits), support may be available to assist with my booking fees through the Cultural Connections Performance Support grant application. This quarterly program provides support to Texas schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations for hiring an artist from the TCA Touring Roster to do a performance. These applications are funded based on a sliding scale or percentage of contracted fees. Support is based on TCA's available funds. I have the application contract forms. Please ask anyone interested to please contact me for more information. The application deadline for the fall school year is August 1. The deadline for Spring is November 1, 2009, and February 1, 2010 for activities book from March 15 through June 14, 2010. I am so honored and privileged to be accepted to this prestigious group. I am listed both as a speaker and as a storyteller. I would appreciate you spreading the word before school is out. That way, they could get their non-profit application in before the August 1 deadline. Thank you, Shirley, Write soon! You will have a larger exposure in a booth because there are people that only go to the exhibits. I am basing what I am saying on what I see at TLA. At TLA you can get a booth sitter for when you are not there. Ask at TLA if you present they will supply you projector, sound and other AV. I would bring my own and only use their screen.
