I do reshelve books with this type of damage.  Sadly, sometimes the book is out of
print and I can't get another, but I still allow the book to give service.  I just
love it when a class is in the library, and a student finds such a book on the
shelves.  The student runs up and says, "Ms. Hunt, look what someone has done to
this book!"  Students show great emotion when this happens, and I have a captive
audience to talk about "how we feel when someone does this to one of our books?"
Then I ask if anyone still wants to check it out.  Often, the book does check out
that day.  It's almost as though they feel like taking care of a wounded book.
Very sweet reactions, and a lesson taught.

Subject: TAR: Reshelving a damaged book

Hi All,

Yesterday, I had a student finally return a book that had been checked out
most of the school year. The student wrote his name all over the book and
outlined the barcode and spine label protector in pen. His teacher is
already working with me to get a replacement fee from him. Since the book is
most definitely still readable, I am wondering whether to reshelve the book
until I get a replacement or whether to give it away. I checked the archives
and found some great damaged book anecdotes and some wonderful sample
letters to send home from parents. Thanks in advance!
