Hello Everyone,

I was asked to post a hit when I had some responses about what the "ideal"
temperature/humidity should be in a library setting. I had a few responses
and I thank everyone who sent me information. As requested the information
gather is below.

It seems the consensus is that the temperature should be kept between 68 and
72 degrees F. This is depended on the area in which you live. In the
south, we have very high humidity and it causes mold and mildew if we are
not careful.

*According to Designing a School Library Media Center for the Future: by
Erikson and Markuson, page 67.

Mechanical systems for school libraries should include: Temperature
control that maintains a twelve-degree variation from sixty-five degrees
(the Library Administration and Management Association standard for
materials) year round.

Humidity control to maintain relative humidity levels between 40 and 55
Percent (40 percent is optimal for computers). Relative humidity levels
about 60 percent will cause damage to materials and present health
concerns. Levels below 40 percent will cause materials to dry out and
disintegrate, and static electricity to build up. The mechanical system
should be designed to maintain this relative humidity level even when the
library is unoccupied and other heat and air conditioning systems are off.

Supply and return air vents located in such a way that people will not be
in drafts and papers will not blow away. Vents should not create undue
noise, especially in production and recording areas, and in distance
learning classrooms.

At least eight to twelve changes of fresh air per hour.

*Most posts agreed it was more of an issue with the humidity levels than the
actual temperature.

Hope this helps anyone who needs it!
