I queried a few days ago about collaborative projects with math
teachers. I got a couple of responses and developed my own project,
which the math department loved.

One that I'd like to do would be to compare the size of each section of
my collection with the circulation statistics, to see if they match. If
50% of my collection is FIC, but it gets 75% of the circulation, I need
to increase FIC purchases. A couple of sharp students ought to be able
to pull this type of thing together in a couple of class periods, but I
just don't have the time to do it myself.

I have a math teacher (geometry) who brings her students in to do
careers research. They work with the guidance counselor, who shows
them a Web site put together by our state, (can’t remember the site,
though!), and I have a ton of “Careers for…” books. (Such as, careers
for book lovers, careers for drama geeks, careers for loudmouths.)
Students spend a few days here on the computers and usingthe books to
find information they need to complete the project. Since it’s for a
math class, they have to find info like salary, and apply that to
basic standards of living to come up with a budget.

Hope this helps,

And finally, the project I came up with which lines up with Maine's
standards:

Assignment:
Use CultureGrams to find statistical information on ten countries.
Choose two factors which you think would be related. For example:
Caloric consumption and Life expectancy (male or female)
        Population and Area
Electricity consumption and green house gas emissions
Create a table and then use that table to create a scatterplot using
DataStudio
Find the line of best fit.
Write an equation that describes the relationship (slope-intercept form)
Do you still think the two factors are linked?
