I do think I have a very good relationship with our reading specialists. I = meet
with them to look at the learning styles of individual students and = gather
materials (sometimes order titles) for those students. I observe = and record
struggling students' library selections to provide information = to the classroom
teacher and the specialist working with that age group. = Sometimes I collaborate
on curriculum. The specialist for the 4th graders = and I created and refined a
genre curriculum for independent reading where = I selected and book talked titles
in the classroom and the teachers helped = select "just right" books for the
individual students. Sometimes I help = create curriculum and the reading
specialists take it over the administrati= on with the classroom teachers. (this is
a mixed blessing, "hey wait a = minute, that was my lesson!" competes with the
stated goal- more kids are = reading more and are excited about books and reading.
Sometime I just have = to let go...) Lisa Lisa Von Drasek=20 Children's Librarian

Hi All,
I'm a newbie, and I was hoping to hear some opinions from the experts:
How do you, as librarians, work with reading specialists in your school? Is there
a collaborative energy or are the roles very separate and distinct? Do you and the
reading specialist work together on literacy and reading promotions? Do you work
together on annual events such as book fairs? I would love to hear how you
envision the perfect partnership between these two roles.

I will be happy to post a HIT with all the responses I receive.

Thank You!

I have a kindergarten teacher who is looking for a book to share with her class
about people in families (like - we have a mom, a dad, a brother, a sister). She
got a lesson plan from a workshop that says to use I Love My Family but there are
lots of books out there with that title and we can't figure out which one it is
(I've been to WorldCat).

Any ideas or suggestions, even for an alternative, would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: HIT: 6 Traits book examples

Thanks to all who emailed me offering your lists and suggestions for books
demonstrating the 6 traits of writing. Here's a hit for anyone else interested.

Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne is the one that immediately comes to mind.
And a quick glance through this 6 Traits book on my desk: "Using Picture Books to
Teach Writing with the Traits" yields the following:
The Babe & I by David A. Adler
Wolf! by Becky Bloom
Gleam and Glow by Eve Bunting
The Frog Principal by Stephanie Calmenson Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin* The
Spider and the Fly by Tony DiTerlizzi* Testing Miss Malarkey by Judy Finchler How
are You Peeling? Foods with Moods by Saxton Freyman Why Heaven is Far Away by
Julius Lester Edward and the Pirates by David McPhail The Bird House by Cynthia
Rylant Just the Two of Us by Will Smith (yes, that Will Smith) My Big Dog by Janet
Stevens (told from the P.O.V. of a cat) The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza) by
Philemon Sturges* Hooray for Diffendoofer Day by Dr. Seuss & Jack Prelutsky*

I haven't looked at all of these books, I starred the ones on this list that I
think are most relevant.

Hope that helps!

My favorite is Voices in the Park by Anthony Browne. It's the same story told from
four points of view, and the illustrations reflect the different voices.

I'd love to see a hit on this.
