SHUT UP!!
Sounds nice doesn't it? Personally I think it sounds ignorant and disrespectful.
Would you want your students to tell you to Shut up? This has been a pet peeve of
mine ever since my children were little. When they would tell someone to shut up I
would immediately put my finger up and say uh...what? and they would say quietly
"be quiet". I carried that to all of my students from K-12 and now post High
School. It's funny when they catch themselves saying it...they'll stop and say be
quiet. One day I was taking over for a second grade teacher who had an all day in
service. She came into the room and told some of the students to shut up. They
went ooohh Ms. Roche does not allow us to say that. I think if just a little
manners are taught, it can go a long way.

Many kids are taught nowadays that SHUT UP is indeed a bad word.... that one
and HATE. I have found over the last few years that kids, especially
preschoolers, are not allowed to say these words because they are "bad"....

I just had a second-grade class leave the library, and on the way out, two
students approached me and said "There's a bad word in this book!" The book
in question was "Bad Kitty," and having read it quite a few times myself I
was shocked to say the least. I asked them, "Are you sure?" and they said
"Yep, it has the s-h word is in it." Mind you, they only said the letters
"s" and "h," but I was pretty sure I knew what they meant. I asked them to
show me, and they opened up the book to reveal the part in the book where
Bad Kitty is caterwauling and someone tells him to "SHUT UP." The girls said
"See! There it is!" and I tried not to laugh as I explained to them that
"shut up" is not a NICE word. They nodded sagely and left feeling they had
done their duty. I sat and giggled, and thought I'd pass that smile on to
you :)
