You folks are amazing. Within about 5 minutes of posting this request, I had three answers. Thank you! Terrible Things by Eve Bunting (An Allegory of the Holocaust) " We read it to our kids when we were talking about the Holocaust, etc. - it was 5th grade - the book had good, sparse pictures (from what I remember) and it was sort of like, the whole point was people, things, animals (it might have been animals in the forest - oh my brain is foggy) were being taken but the other animals didn't care/notice until there were fewer and fewer and finally 'they' came and took the last ones left."
