Thank you to everyone who responded!!! Here is the hit as promised. Happy Holidays Savvy - Law Chronicles of Narnia - Lewis Mysterious Benedict Society - Stewart (& sequel) Tuck Everlasting - Babbit Bridge to Terabithia - Paterson Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series, if she likes fantasy Voigt's Homecoming series (Tillerman series) Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry - Taylor Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z - Messner Elijah of Buxton - Curtis Penderwicks - Birdsall Chains - Anderson Magic Thief - Prineas Tale of Despereaux - DiCamillo Out of the Dust - Hesse Cooper's The Dark Is Rising series A Long Way from Chicago, A Year Down Yonder & A Season of Gifts - Peck Ella Enchanted - Levine (and several more of Levine's books might appeal to her) Shannon Hale titles The True Meaning of Smekday - Rex (if she has a good sense of humor) Gollywhopper Games - Feldman Hattie Big Sky - Larson Martin's Main Street series Listening for Lions - Whelan Do you do AR? If so, you might consider lowering her ZPD range so she can read books in the 4th grade level and higher so she's not stuck. If you don't do AR or you can lower her level, I would suggest 39 Clues. Does she like fantasy? If so, Eragon, Harry Potter, LOTR, Septemus Heap, Lost Years of Merlin, etc., might be good choices for her. If she likes historical fiction, what about Anne of Green Gables or books by Ann Rinaldi? Rifles for Watie is also a good one! You might also try Lois Lowry and Madaline L'Engle. Those are higher level thinking books for sure! Good luck! I would look to classics such as Little Women, Black Beauty, Wind in the Willows, Treasure Island, Robin Hood, Treasure Island, books by L.M. Montgomery. Some of these are 7th & 8th grade level, but I would think these would be high enough because they are not written in a style that our children are used to. How about PRINCESS ACADEMY by Shannon Hale? TWO PRINCESSES OF BAMARRE by Gail Carson Levine? THE PENDERWICKS? What kinds of genres is she interested in? For example, many people like The Lightning Thief and the other Percy Jackson stories by Rick Riordan, but I would not have touched them with a ten foot pole as a teen or preteen. Junior jedi nights is a star wars series that's advanced, but not inapprorpiate I would also recommend classic novels like Jane Eyre and Black Beauty again they are more complex than books at her level, but you know they are safe. Underground by Jean Ferris Secret Keeper by Mitali Perkins Red Moon at Sharpsburg by Rosemary Wells Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier My nephew was reading at a 12th grade level by that age. We let him read what he wanted and he made excellent choices all by himself. He's a great kid and now a sophomore at Penn State. Relax! has she read all the classics for younger levels, like newbery award winners, state award winners, etc. Try The Goose Girl series by Shannon Hale.
