I had asked for suggestions from all of you about a Hunger Games party a month or
so ago, so I wanted to share what I ended up doing. My party was yesterday from
3:15-5:00 and was to celebrate Teen Read Week!

My schedule of events: (Students had not read the book before the party!)

*
        I showed the book trailer (from SchoolTube)
*
        Listened to the clip of the author reading an excerpt from Ch. 11
(Scholastic website)
*
        Dividing into districts (I passed out stickers that gave each person a
district with a picture that represented that district.) Then I went over what
district did. "If you are from district 1, then __________. etc)
*
        Dartboard Game (I divided them by districts into groups where I had a
nerf-style dartboard. The highest point-earner in each group won a small prize.)
*
        Boy Scout survival simulation. This is the situation where you are
hypothetically in a plane crash and you scavenge certain things out of the
wreckage. Group members then have to rank the items in order of importance to
thier survival. They then get a score for their top 5 items. The team with the
lowest score are the survivors. This team also won a small prize. (The actual
list has 12 items on it; I took out the whiskey and the loaded gun since we were
in a school setting. I made a ppt to go with this as well as a set of cards for
each group to have to manipulate around for their rankings.)
*
        Snack Time (We had jerky, pastries, home-made brick oven bread, pecans,
strawberries & blueberries & hot chocolate)
*
        Then I had someone that came in and talked to the students about archery
and did a demonstration.
*
        Door prizes - I gave away two copies of the book at the very end

The students had a great time, and my hold list for this book has grown
dramatically! Thank you again to everyone that offered suggestions and ideas! If
you interested in any of my materials, just let me know; I will be glad to share!

"Wicked people never have time for reading," Dewey said. "It's one of the reasons

I'm currently reading The Doomsday Key by James Rollins. What about you?
