You make a great point-it seems to me it's a matter of purpose. If you are wanting
portable computing, then yes, an iPod Touch is the way to go. I'm really interested
in the Nook because I want an e-Reader as an electronic book device, without all
the extras. Crazy as it may seem, I'm the kind of person that's too easily
distracted to use an iPod Touch. :D I've wanted a Kindle, but I haven't been
comfortable with Amazon's proprietary clamp. The Nook seems much more
librarian-friendly. I'm never on top of fads, but I did pre-order the Nook.

I'm also interested in the potential for library use with the Nook-BN has an app
that will work with iPod Touches, Macs, PCs, etc., so we can potentially purchase a
couple of Nooks for our libraries and then lend out books, regardless of device. In
the case of our libraries, a Nook would make more sense than an iPod Touch for
lending-but the sharing capability is there should a student/parent with an iPod
Touch want to "borrow" a book we have on the Nook (is that a Dr. Seuss sentence or
what?).

Love this listserv-you all have been an amazing resource for me and my libraries!

OK, here's my chance to put in a plug for iPod Touch! My hubby bought me one in
April because I had talked about one but thought it was rather extravagant,
useless etc. Much to my surprise, I LOVE IT AND COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT IT! It has
an Amazon Kindle app (free) that I use to purchase books. I pay the same as
someone with a Kindle only I don't have to carry around that heavy, bulky thing in
my purse so if I'm unexpectedly in line somewhere, anywhere I just pull out my
Touch and READ! It is awesome! I can now read in bed without bothering my husband
because it has its own light. All the other apps (some of course are just for fun)
are just as useful too: Contacts (I store all my address book here, it syncs with
my Google Mail), Bloomberg for my stocks, Keeper for my passwords (it's encryted),
Calendar (has a reminder which I need), Google Earth (need wi-fi), a shopping
list, recipe book, dictionary, calculators, Public Radio Stations and Pandora,
iFitnes, WebMD, art galleries, photo manipulation etc. We have wireless Internet
at home and here at school so I can use my wi-fi when necessary. I have the 16GB
Touch and it is adequate for me. It cost $299, less 10% on sale and I got a $30
Target gift card! They were having a promotion at that time. Kindle is at least
$300, is ONLY a reader and the size and weight makes it inconvenient to carry.

To be honest, I would hesitate to buy any propriatary book reader. I have many
books in formats which neither Kindle nor Nook are set up to read, yet my ancient
Palm PDA handles just fine - if I changed to either of these devices I would
actually be taking a step back in some ways.

Rather than looking at dedicated ebook readers, I am looking forward instead to
the growth of all-in-one devices. In a few years, I expect to be able to buy a
device which can read books in a multitude of formats, surf the web, take pictures,
play music and videos, and act as a phone as well if desired. That said, if I were
in the market for a new ebook reader today, I would probably look at a netbook (if
my first priority was having a decent screen size) or an iPod Touch (if I was more
concerned with portability).
