Even if you do, I have trained my kids to shelve their own books. They
will not, and are not equipped to put away books with out some sort of
guidance, I see the spine labels as guides to the neighborhoods,
streets, and addresses of their books, so they can sleep in their own
beds at night. No spine labels, would mean I would have to shelve the
thousands of books that come in and out of the library every week. My
vote is no.

It is much easier to just do an hour or so of work every 6 weeks or so,
and a thorough clean twice a year, than to shelve all of those books. I
would never get all the rest done that I need and want to do for my
students and teachers. Plus, shelving allows real life practice of
skills needed in every day life.

just my 2 cents,
Colette

What if you don't have smart barcodes? Then what?

Subject: Tar: Cataloging question

Good Morning, group!

At a meeting last night it was mentioned that barcodes need to be
streamlined and that books no longer need spine labels. Right now,
information on the barcode provides title, call number and numerals of
the
barcode as well as the symbol that the scanner reads. I'd like to
hear
not
only from the group, but from people teaching cataloging about this
new
idea. Comments were made that so many of us in the district finished
our
degrees so long ago tat we were out of touch. My own last cataloging
class
was in 2007. Apparently, that apparently makes me a dinosaur in
cataloging.

This isn't so much a cataloging issue as a system (Destiny) issue.

Bring on those comments and I shall pass them on.

Leslie
