Greetings, Thanks to all who replied to my question about labtops, netbooks etc. Here are the responses I received. Debbie Benedict LMS Litchfield, CT Debbie - Compaq is coming out with a laptop for less then $400 dollars to combat the mini-laptop craze. I see staple has them for $379, I would go that route verses a mini - as they do not have CD roms and it could be pain to install programs. As the holidays draw near you see probably even better deals. Cindy Cindy Glavin Library Media Specialist/Computer Teacher Big Timber, MT Debbie, I had the opportunity to work with a pilot elementary school instituting netbooks into the classroom last year. We went with the Acer netbooks, best price and largest keyboard with an 8" monitor. At first the Linus OS was installed, and there were problems with wireless configuration. During the summer they were switched to XP and with 400 summer school students, they worked much better, with fewer problems with crashes and speed. We were able to establish all applications that the elementary students used on thier laptops (MAC) by using open source software. So for under $300 per machine (mouse and thumb drive extra) the district was able to equipment their elementaries and the middle schools with netbooks for every student. Biggest problem was saving to the network and that is where the thumb drives come in - students each have one and save there files there. The experience was over all very good - now teacher staff development was another issue. But I am also working with another district that is installing them in both their elementaries and middle schools. Barbara Barbara C.
