Greetings to my LM NET PLN,

Here are a few ideas that came in for a potential "Around the World in
8 Days" Reading Promotion.
Alice Bull shares:
Several years ago I used the theme We Live in a Book World and based it on
where these authors were born. I also included Robert Munsch (an
elementary favorite) and explained he was born in Pennsylvania but became
a Canadian citizen.

I just did this last summer for the reading program.

What ages were you thinking of? I have K-8 and can send you a partial list
of the books we used once we get our computer server at the school up and
going again (which will hopefully be sometime over the weekend). We are
on break now so who knows if they will actually get to it--I was just
there a bit ago to print off some worksheets and everything was down.

Just off hand I remember doing

Arctic
Mr. Popper's Penguins and some of the Shackleton books

Africa
Ear,Nose, Eye (?) Nancy Farmer
Alexander McCall Smith's Akimbo books...

South America
Journey to the River Sea--Ibbotson
Alma Flor Ada books--younger kids

Europe
Star of Kazan--Ibbotson
Artemis Fowl and other books by Colfer are British
The Yellow Star--Deedy
WWII books

Australia
I can picture the series in my head but can't remember the author. I'll
get back to you but it is actually quite good and set up for Jr. Higher's.
Mem Fox for little ones.

Asia
Linda Sue Park has done tons of stuff about Korea

OK--at least that is a start. I also told the kids that if they read a
book by an author from a certain continent I would accept that. For place
like Antartica where there really isn't much of a selection, I also told
them that they could read a couple of national geographic articles and
report on them and I would accept it.

They had to read the book, give me a one paragraph summary of it and
answer at least one random question about it that I pulled out by glancing
through it very quickly so it was an easy question but one in the middle
or towards the end so that they didn't just read the first few pages and
get it. They then got a stamp in their "passport" which I had made up.

I do a unit with Kindergarten in which we travel to a different country
each week. These are the books I have been using:
Runaway Rice Cakes- China
Japan- read Yoko's Paper cranes-
Africa- Papa do you love me and Water Hole waiting
Australia Koala Lou and Do you do Digerdoo
south america The Great Kapok tree and Rain forest animals
Europe- ireland-st patricks day
Europe Madeline and the trouble with trolls
Antartica by Helen Cowper

Please post a hit. I would like to find some books for other countries.

Here are a couple of suggestions for the Around the World theme:

For our book fair each class is creating a poster on the theme, "Reading
Around the World." I've asked them to tie it into their SS SOL content if
they can. For example, one fourth grade did a map of Virginia and printed
nonfiction book covers of a product from each region. Third grade did
theirs on Greece, Rome, Egypt, and Mali. Some posters are totally teacher
created, some have student art on them. It's a good project many give to
their practicum students to do, too. I put the teacher wish list pockets
above each poster with a picture of the teacher on it. I display the
posters in the library hall the week of the book fair. Many save the
posters and display them in their rooms the rest of the year.

My first year at Lacey they had some Around the World celebration which
included the creation of a recipe book where family and staff submitted
international recipes. They also had a parade one day where each
classroom was assigned a country, dressed up in costumes, and paraded
through the halls.
