First of all, thank you to everyone who responded to my question; I learned more
about the process from you all in a day than I had in dealing with the store for
more than a month.

My experience:

I emailed the Kingston Barnes and Noble Community Relations Manager, after getting
her card from the store, she wasn’t in. After a month of no reply, I went in to
speak to her.

Her response:

You emailed me right…did you email anyone else? I have to talk to my manger to see
if I can give out this information… she just left…I still have your email, can I
email you back?
Needless to say, I never heard back from her.
I emailed the Colonie Center B and N, never heard back either.
Posted to LM_Net and got some good information.

According to a Midwest City, OK middle school librarian

Under $2,000 you get 10% cash back or 15% in Barnes & Noble Gift Cards
$2,000-$10,000 you get 15% cash back or 20% in Barnes & Noble Gift Cards
$10,000 or more you get 20% cash back or 25% in Barnes & Noble Gift Cards

Topeka, KS a K-12 district with 5000 students has done them for 4 years and made
an average of $1500

Usually does them between 9-7
This year 9-5

Michigan, over the phone approval, in store said that their potential group would
be too small

I tried to put together a book fair for our after school book club. Rural water
area with limited resources and high unemployment/loss of housing (we are in
Michigan!). The rep approved everything over the phone, I was VERY clear re: group
size, programming, etc. I thought that he was coming to have me sign paperwork and
instead told me our group was too small and we wouldn't attract enough patrons from
our area to make it worth while so they wouldn't let us have a book fair (no one
else had one booked when we wanted). Even if the administrators, teachers and
personal friends had been the only ones participating I think that we could have
generated a couple of hundred dollars. We were just trying to figure out a way to
purchase newer, popular titles for book club. Perhaps this is a sign of the
economic hardships for B&N?

A Sunbury, Ohio high school librarian said that she made $200 from a bookfair but
had hoped for more and that “They pretty much did all the work and I collected a
gift card after the weekend was over.”

A Chesterfield County, VA librarian added that gift card purchases don’t count and
you can’t advertise in or around the store. You can also have volunteers work the
gift wrap table that is provided by the store for donations.

An Austin, TX librarian stated I believe the cut is about 40% IF you take your
proceeds in a Barnes and Noble gift card. We’ve had one for 3 years now and have
been very satisfied.

A Wallington, NJ Jr/ Sr High School librarian stated that she’s “made about $900 in
a gift card for several years in a row. It's the best fund raiser for a library.”

A librarian from a K-12 Catholic school stated that “We had a B&N book fair last
April. Did almost $6000 in sales; got a B&N gift card for just under $1200.
Planning on doing it again this April 2010.”
