Hello,

Here are some sample questions from my orientation Library Scavenger
Hunt. I will most often give a brief introduction to where things are
located, the difference between fiction [imagination] and nonfiction
[information] and go over library policies, etc. Then I let them go
and discover stuff on their own. Sometimes I don't even have an
intro, but put the information within the question [e.g. locate the
copy machine. How much does it cost to make a copy? Locate the sign
at the front of the door - where are you supposed to place your passes
when you come in at lunch? ]. It all depends on the need of the class
- and their previous experience, if any.

Some scavenger hunts use only the catalog; others use both; and some
are just to help the kids find their way in the library itself.

Here are sample questions from a variety of "hunts". Also, scavenger
hunts work for ALL grades and all levels. I give one about location
to 9th graders and the seniors get the database orientation scavenger
hunt.

Have fun! Orientation should be about learning that the library is an
exciting place to be. [IMHO].

1. Using the card catatog locate the
author________________________________. Write down one of the titles
here:

2. Go to the shelf and find a fiction book by Avi. List the title here:

3. Does this library own any books by Stephen King? If yes...list
titles.

  4. Using the card catalog find me 2 fiction books about baseball.
(hint: imagination NOT information – remember to use your subject
search)

5. Using the card catalog find me the titles of 2 books that would
help me with my animal report on bears. List the titles and call
numbers. (hint: I don't want fiction! Remember...the spine label will
have numbers on it)

  6. What is the subject covered by the dewey number: 641.5? 973.4?
etc.

  7. Biographies are information books about people. Locate the
Biography section. How are they shelved?

  8. Use the computer catalog. Click on [the icon for our union
catalog] . Which libraries own a book by Chris Crutcher?

9. The encyclopedias are on a shelf in the back of the library. Choose
one and using the index, locate the answer to this question: When was
the Magna Carta written?

10. The dictionaries are located at the end of the encyclopedia shelf.
Use a dictionary to write down the meaning of ONE of these words:

palfrey Klondike Nonconformist Plunder dulcimer kapok

  10. Now choose one of those words. Go to the Internet. Find a
dictionary and define the word you chose.

  11. Which resource was the quickest for finding your definition?

12: Introduce yourself to your teacher librarian and library
assistant. Write their names here: [we always make them shake our
hands and we look them in the eye and say good morning to each of them
- it's surprising how few know how to shake hands and introduce
themselves!]

Have fun!
