PLEASE tell me you're not serious. You don't think the president has the
right to give a speech encouraging his/her country's children to aim
high and understand that education is the key to everyone's brighter
future? Can the office be objective? What's political about getting and
cherishing an education? Has no student in your school ever watched a
presidential speech in class before? They tend, in large part, to be a
bit dry, but I'm pretty sure there won't be any subliminal messages
encouraging all children to grow up and become Democrats. And as for the
"compulsory education" angle, you have to know that EVERY news program
has some angle, the same can be said for lectures in the classroom. We
still watch them and we still present them. We all put a little bit of
who we are, and what we believe, into educating our students and that's
okay. That doesn't mean we hammer them with a doctrine, we teach them
how to grow up and make choices for themselves. That's what we want for
them. I believe that's what our president wants for them. I even believe
that's pretty much what every president we've ever had wanted for our
nation's children. I'm truly sorry about the length of this reply...I am
just stunned at the cynicism and hysteria about a simple speech. People,
I think we all just need to get real.

LM_NET,
I APOLOGIZE! I thought I had found the actual text to NEXT Tuesday
speech. However, after further investigating the resource which I
should have done in the first place before I posted, I've discovered
it was an earlier speech on public education.

Nevertheless, since our public educational system control remains
largely locale instead of national although perhaps it should be more
national thus uniform, I'm not sure the authority of the office of the
presidency should be utilized regardless what he says. Can the office
really be objective and/or politically neutral? Also, remember,
because of compulsory education--students are a captive audience
without a choice of content.
