You might be interested to know how your Australian colleagues cover this issue, particularly as every school has at least one 15 minute recess break and one 45-60 minute lunch break. We are just rostered on playground duty, with the proviso negotiated by the Union, that we each have at least a 30-min student free lunch break each day. The number of duties each weeks depends on the size of the school and the number of kids within it. You can be on every day. In many schools, particularly primary, the classroom teacher supervises the children eating for ten minutes and then the play break is covered by teachers roaming specific parts of the playground. All the children are encouraged to be outside playing getting fresh air and exercise. It's just a part of the job here, always has been and probably always will be. In some schools, the library is open at recess and lunch and there has been some sort of negotiated solution to when the break is taken, but I had my library open Mon-Thurs at lunch only. Friday was my day to touch base with the rest of the staff. I can't imagine ever working for a principal who made such unreasonable demands as those described by the original sender, and I don't think my colleagues would allow such a situation to happen either. Union or not, you cannot give quality service to anyone in those conditions.
