We have a step mom challenging Shooting Star by Fred McKissack, Jr. in "my" middle school. This parent stated that the "language and content throughout the book" is the problem. She has the book totally marked with posted it notes and is keeping the book. I have charged her son for cost of the book and immediately bought another copy. She wants no one in our district under the age of 18 to read this book. I do not believe that she will be satisfied with the removal of the book from my middle school or with keeping the book at my level. I believe she will continue the fight to the school board. Our Level One local school committee meets next week. We have a good selection policy in place. I have a statement from Mr. McKissack, reviews, and copies of the ALA Library Bill of Rights. Can you offer any other suggestions as to materials I should have or what else I should do? BTW, it's a fabulous book! Thank you for your help.
