I had to share this with you all...
We are in the midst of CRCT testing and, of course, when students show up
late they are "housed" in the media center until the test is over and they
can rejoin their classmates. I'm using this time to do my inventory, too.
This morning everyone in the media center was reading or doing homework
except for one young man. I asked him if he wanted to get a book or a
magazine and he shook his head. Then I asked him if he'd like to listen to a
book and his face lit up and he said he did. I got one of our books on tape,
a cassette player, some headphones, and set him up. I checked on him
occasionally and he seemed to be enjoying the book (Babe and Me by Gutman).
About an hour passed and I looked up and he was just staring at the cassette
player with the headphones off. I went over to ask if he wasn't enjoying the
book. He said he really liked it. I asked why he stopped listening. He said,
"I don't know why but it just cut off."
I realized he had no idea that he had to take out cassette #1 and replace it
with cassette #2. Sigh...

"It is more than ironic that school districts are willing to spend hundreds
of thousands of dollars on reading programs and staff development which
*have
had limited success* in boosting test scores, but are unwilling to invest in
school library programs that show direct
correlations <http://www.lrs.org/impact.php> to student success."
