I will be teaching one class of World History next year and of course want to have daily discussions of current events, focusing on the world. The problem: I teach in a rural school, most students do not get newspapers (and the major local paper does not seem to have a lot of world news or let us buy classroom copies anymore), most do not have Internet access and if they do it is dial up, computers are available at school but we are not a one to one school. I would like them to come to class with a current event ready to discuss it, not look it up in class. We are going to 4 day weeks next year, t our class time will be around 56 minutes. My question: How have other schools dealt with discussing current events? Do you tape a news program and then replay it and discuss? Dedicate one day to finding and discussing current events? I would like to have the students actively involved in finding the news, but not sure how to proceed. Thanks!
