Lisa, your suggestions are terrific. I like portfolio suggestion best. In
these times most of us would be well served to create portfolios, reports and
records of our impact on students. I'm going to begin collection things ASAP.

Thank you Christine,
These are great ideas for all of us. Also if you are presently in position, now
is the time to be documenting your work and curriculum and creating a portfolio
of student work. Be prepared at anytime to present at a curriculum meeting,
faculty meeting and/or at the district level. These are tough time. Be prepared.

Lisa had great suggestions, all of which would work very well to market
yourself. However, I would add at least one more thing - as you participate in
your practicum, work hard to collaborate with one or more grade levels, working
with the teacher(s) on a lesson, implementation, followed up with a verbal and
written review of the lesson and isolating what did not work and how to fix it
as well as what did work particularly well. Having all this written out as a
lesson that lists the district's or state's targeted curriculum goals (as well
as library standards) is a nice addition to your portfolio, the more the better.
Also, span the lessons across grade levels to show flexibility as well as adding
modifications in the lesson to address all learner types.

Another activity you may want to consider is offering a book club either before,
during, or after school. You may want to target a specific population of the
school where you are at, such as struggling readers, boys, or grade level. Keep
a record of what is read, activities done, and samples of students' work.

These are just a few ideas that would have stood me in good stead during
interviews...if only I had known! I was hired after only two MLS classes due to
need but now times are far more competitive.

Good luck and best wishes!

Reading is not a duty, and has consequently no business to be made disagreeable.
