I am totally unfamiliar with the hiring process in the US but as well as all
the great suggestions made, I would suggest becoming familiar with the
philosophies, policies, programs, practices and priorities  of those
districts where you are likely to be applying for a job so that you come
across as authoritative and knowledgeable in an interview. Perhaps even have
some evidence  of these in action in your portfolio.
