Subject: GEN: MUHSD Librarians on the chopping block

Well, after decades of our district (Merced Union High School District)
having fully staffed libraries I recieved notification from my principal
that librarians are on the list of proposed cuts being presented to our
board on Monday. The proposal is to fire 4 of the 5 librarians and have
one
district librarian oversee 5 comprehensive sites (~10,000 students). As
the
senior librarian in the district that would be me. The irony (OK, one
of
many ironies) is that our superintendent declared at the begining of the
year that literacy is our number one priority.

The official list of cuts has not been posted on our district web site
yet
even though the meeting is Monday. Should be posted in the Board of
Trustees
section sometime this afternoon.

Our local paper is the Merced Sun-Star if you would like to send a
letter to
the editor (those of you in California probably already have some you
have
sent to other papers). http://www.mercedsunstar.com/

Thanks,
Tony

Subject: HIT: Student Response Systems or clickers

Thanks for all the great input about student response systems. I was
a little surprised that no one mention Poll Everywhere, which is an
online subscription. I'm not quite sure how it works, but I thought
is was similar to the clickers. I am passing this information on to
my principal and possible our School Improvement Team. Thanks for
the information. We will now be able to make an informed decision.

CPS clickers from e-Instruction.

We use the CPS clickers from e-Instruction. We love them, especially
if in use with a Mobi from e-Instruction. However, they are just as
effective when used on their own. Many teachers use them to review
concepts before tests, because the teachers can see immediatly who
gets the material and who doesn't. I have never heard a teacher say
anything negative about them. I only get positive feedback.

I have the CPS units from einstruction.com and the Activotes from
Promethean. I honestly like the reports that you can create from the
CPS units better than anything that I can do with the Activotes. I
can get a breakdown of students, percentage correct on the questions
and see how many students gave which answer and a bunch of other
reports without having to create a spreadsheet and do it all myself.

We have several sets of CPS units. The teachers who use them really
like them. It does take some work to get your questions and classes
set up, but the kids seem to enjoy this alternative to paper/pencil
testing.

CPS (Classroom Performance Systems) also has portable chalkboard
units that interface with their CPS setups, and I have a couple of
teachers who use the heck out of them with their classes. I would
definitely recommend this company. You will probably also need to do
a training session for the teachers who intend to utilize them.

  IR from e-instruction

We bought the cheaper IR "clickers" from E-instruction <http://
www.einstruction.com/products/assessment/index.html> We have been
really happy with them. For checkout we got two sets numbered 1-32
and one set numbered from 33-64 so we can use two sets together for
faculty meetings, and competitions between classes. They are simple,
tough and small enough to be held comfortably for an extended period
of time.

  Qwizdom

We use qwizdom, and have for years. Love it cause each kid gets a
remote, they can only put in one answer and it gives them immediate
feedback.

We have Quizdom. They are not used very often. I think that if you
had a set in your room and were a techie you would use them a but it
takes time to set them up and develop the activities. They do have a
shared activities site but our teachers are so loaded down with
curriculum that this is just one more thing that isn't as practical
as it sounds. Its bells and whistles.

We purchased a set of Quizdom clickers a few years ago. Our
teachers found the software rather clunky to use and the set that we
bought required a lot of trouble shooting when moved from room to
room (which is a feature we very much wanted). We were not happy
with the Quizdom product, though it may be due specifically to the
way we were trying to use them at our site.

Turning Point.

We have since purchases multiple sets of clickers from Turning Point.
They have been wildly successful. Teachers love them. They are
(apparently, since they're always being used I haven't had my own
chance to use them) easy to set up and use and seem fairly trouble
free. Most vendors will send someone out to demo and many will give
you "loaners" for your faculty to try before you purchase. I would
highly recommend taking the time to try the product at your site
before purchasing a set.

We purchased "clickers" from Turning Point. The principal first
used it with the staff, then our early adopters started using it. Now
our computer aps teacher is teaching his students how to use it. It
seems to me that a simple presentation can be made fairly easily, but
the learning curve can be a mite intimidating. We also use it more
for survey type data than for demonstrating learning, but that will
be coming soon, too. Even so, they're kind of expensive and having
more than one set might be necessary if you expect a lot of use.

  Senteo

Senteo clickers by Smart Tech. Smart Tech is countywide with their
white boards and such, so it was obvious choice for us.

Pro - sturdy but good size, easy usb receiver that uses radio waves
not infrared (so can't be blocked by student)

Con - new software is a bit awkward but maybe because I like to older
stuff, seems a bit pricy at $1800 for set of 24 with receiver and
software ( I did not price compare so it may be going price).

We have Senteo. We bought 3 class sets. As of now, only one
teacher uses them because the initial set-up is tedious. Hopefully
more will use them next year as they will have summer to set up their
systems. The teacher who does use them love it. It was a great deal
of trial and error getting everything in place, though.

??
We have 4 sets in my school- they were about $1,000 a set. The
students and the younger, more tech savvy teachers like them very
much. Pros- they are fun to use and are a great activity. Cons- the
expense and the battery changing that must occur at least once a
year. We are a big school (2300 kids and about 100 teachers/staff
members.) One of the biggest problems is that some people come and
get a set, then pass it on to another person in their dept. or on
their floor. Then when asked to give them up, they go all stupid on
me- "Well, I don't have them- I gave them to so and so." Then so and
so gave them to someone else and on it goes. The set I have in the
library today has some backs missing- the set is no longer pristine-
