Good Morning all! I have a parent who is concerned that her second grader is reading Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry in her guided reading group. This little girl has an exceptionally high reading level for second grade and is capable of reading and comprehending the complexity of the book; however, the parent is concerned that just because the child is able to read it, doesn't mean she should read it. No letter was sent home prior to the book being handed out nor was a syllabus-style list sent home at the start of the year. Your thoughts - Is the book appropriate for second grade? If not, how should the parent approach the teacher? The parent is anticipating the teacher taking the book away from her daughter, thus singling her out to be the only one not allowed to read the book.
