Hi Again, Michaela Banek-Zorica from Zargreb used SL to conduct all her courses when the univeristy was out of action for a semester due to policital upheaval. She has also written her thesis on SL. However, there are lots of these virtual worlds available - SL is quite clunky to use. As always when working with any technology in education what we do has to come back to a single question - what are the students learning and how do I know or how will they demonstrate their learning. We should be using technology to facilitate that process, not simply because it's there. Too often the focus is on the technology and not the learning. The technology should be value adding to the educational/learning experience and we should be teaching students how to use it effectively, efficiently and appropriately. Too often we a lot of assumptions about their abiltiies and what the technology can add to the educational experience. :) BC President WA Operations, WASLA, http://www.wasla.asn.au/ Vice President, Advocacy & Promotion, IASL: www.iasl-online.org The GiggleIT Project: www.iasl-online.org/sla/giggleIT/index.htm LIS@ECU: www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/LIS/index.php Australian School Library Research Project: www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/ASLRP/ Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Security Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." The invite was sent to LMnetters form Lisa Perez, and seems like a great way to get a feel for second life and learning in a virtual world. I'm looking forward to it! Who knows how old you really are when working anonymously behind a computer screen? Kids will explore. We were using S&L at an open day (uni) and in NASA looking at videos from the NASA video library when some really questionable stuff appeared. OK for anyone over 18, but under 18? FaceBook has an age limit of 13, but how many tweens are in there? I am active in SL and it has changed a lot in the past two years. Yes there is some VERY adult content places but you have to go there deliberately. I entered very cautiously because I had heard stories about SL. The person who go me involved is the director of a virtual academy and they teach classes there. I have taken classes, gone to concerts, met friends and had very stimulating conversations -- at 3 AM, in my jammies, my insomnia raging -- me in USA and them in other parts of the world. I have even taken part in the "Bardic Circle" storytelling competition. It is amazing what is available. SL is divided into "islands" and each establishes its own policies. You have to agree to abide by certain codes before you are allowed to be involved in the groups. There are very strict rules about appearance, violence and language in the educational sections. In the years I have been involved, there has been only one person who showed up in appropriately dressed at an educational gathering. That person was dealt with swiftly by those who monitor such things in each section. Over 3300 academic entities have presences in SL now and such organizations as iNACOL, ISTE and Cambridge University are represented. For most of SL, you HAVE to be 18 to enroll but there is a very active area for 13 to 18 which is more tightly controlled than the above. T.K.
