I am hoping someone can offer some suggestions: our district currently has
13 school buildings. There are 7 media specialists who divide their time
between 2 buildings apiece, usually seeing the entire population once a
week for computer lab, and troubleshooting technology issues. We have media
techs who spend all day everyday in their respective buildings running the
libraries and seeing each class for read-alouds and book circulation once
per week, also. Our district will be undergoing drastic fiscal cuts, and one
of the cuts approved by the Board is eliminating all 14 media tech positions
What I am wondering is if there are any Media Specialists out there that
are solely responsible for both library and computer lab with no assistance?
How does that work? Are you seeing kids in lab/library on only an as-needed
basis? Are teachers checking books out to students? Are you seeing the
entire population once a month? I guess I am just interested in hearing how
other districts schedule the usage of their Media Departments to give me a
starting point of how to wrap my head around providing services to the same
amount of clientele with 2/3 less staff. I am open to any and all
suggestions, ideas and advice!
Thank You,
Mrs. Koneake Lawrence
