Hello again!

This is a follow-up reminder about the survey I posted on Feb. 9 (survey below).

Thanks to the many school librarians who took the time to fill out the survey! If
you have not yet had time to do this, we would appreciate your help as we try to
form a current picture of school library cataloging and to determine what help
school catalogers need. There is space for comments, in addition to the survey
questions. You should be able to fill out the survey in 15-20 minutes.

Please do not reply to the list. Hit Reply, and then copy our e-mail addresses into
the "To" line:

Again, thanks to all who have already sent us your completed surveys. Feel free to
send the survey to colleagues who are not on the LM_NET listserv. We would like as
much input as possible. We plan to start compiling the results March 1, 2010.

Greetings!

My name is Marilyn McCroskey. I am a former school librarian, now a cataloger and
professor of Library Science at Missouri State University (MSU) in Springfield, Mo.
For several years, I have represented the American Association of School Librarians
on the CIP (Cataloging-in-Publication) Advisory Group to the Library of Congress
(LC). I am also a member of the ALA ALCTS Committee on the Cataloging of Children's
Materials, sponsor of the book many of you may use, Cataloging Correctly for Kids.
This committee has sponsored cataloging workshops for school librarians in the
past. Both of these groups are interested in school library cataloging and how they
might help you with this task.

In 2006, I sent a quick survey to school librarians to get information for the CIP
Advisory Group above. Many of you responded to it-thanks! Soon afterward, the
Library of Congress also posted a survey, primarily on the use of CIP. Many of you
responded to that survey also, as well as to an LC survey in 2009. Thanks for your
willingness to provide information about cataloging in school libraries!

A colleague, Raegan Wiechert, a cataloger and Assistant Professor of Library
Science at MSU, helped me compile the responses to the 2006 MSU survey for reports
to the CIP Advisory Group and the Committee on the Cataloging of Children's
Materials. Both groups found this information very helpful. Now my colleague and I
have developed another survey designed to get more specific information about
cataloging in school libraries. This information may be valuable to the field of
librarianship. Some survey questions are similar; some are new. The new survey
includes some questions about the new cataloging rules, RDA (Resource Description
and Access), which are to be implemented in 2011. We especially encourage comments
on any of the questions, or general comments at the end.

We hope that many school librarians will respond to our new survey. No recent
studies of school library cataloging have been done, and perhaps it is time to let
the library world know about the efforts of school library catalogers. In part, we
hope that the survey results will show training needs for school library
catalogers. We hope the survey results will be of use to library organizations and
to library educators who are providing continuing education and/or are preparing
school librarians.

What do you NEED? This is your chance to make your needs known!

Following is the new MSU survey about school library cataloging. You should be able
to complete it in 15-20 minutes. Your responses to the survey will remain
anonymous, although written comments might be quoted without names or other
identifying information. Participation in the survey is voluntary; therefore, omit
questions that you do not wish to answer, though full responses would be helpful.
There are no known risks for participating in this survey. The act of responding to
the survey will mean that you have read this informed consent statement, and your
response implies informed consent to use the data. The data and anonymous comments
will be used to write at least one journal article. Also, the survey data may be
reported to various professional groups interested in school library cataloging and
in providing training for school library catalogers. Return e-mails will be stored
on private office computers, and any printouts will be stored in our private files
only. Neither will be shared with anyone else.

Please do not reply to the list. To send us the completed survey, hit Forward, fill
it out, and send it to both of us at the e-mail addresses below. Let us know if you
have questions.

Thank you for your help with this! If possible, please send back the survey by
March 1, 2010.
