Thanks to those who sent me information! I start 3rd graders off with Power Points I always to Twas the Night Before Christmas - I have each line done up on a slide with a Christmas background. They get to create their own poem - Twas the Night Before Christmas and all through the _______. They add what ever they want. It gets silly, but once everyone is finished (we don't worry about spelling at this point) they get to present their Power Point. I am sure there are other poems you could do the same thing with. For the 4th graders, we do a Power Point an Native American tribes. We have a Native American book series that are their guide for locating information. I give them a sheet of questions they should be looking up - Where does your tribe live, What kinds of homes did your tribe live in, what types of foods did your tribe hunt and gather, and what is your tribe like now. I create the basic Power Points slides with the titles, students then fill in the text area with their information. We then find pictures on the web to pull into our Power Points and then we walk through how to change the backgrounds design and colors. What I did was have my students do a trifold brochure on Social Studies standards. The students had to copy my document - They had to change the paper set up to landscape, create 3 columns w/ a line in between as well as insert pictures relating to the topic. My students did a wonderful job. They were truly excited in creating the brochure. I did give them verbal instructions on how to get to Microsoft Word, page set up, etc. I did put up on the overhead how to move to the next column and how to insert the pictures. They were self motivated and all the students completed the assignment. Some of my students came after school to complete their assignments. This is as good a place to start as any. http://www.growing.course.com/index.html I have a computer teacher that has the kids make their own PowerPoint in class. She sets up folders for each student and pulls all the possible pictures and stores them on our network server so they don’t have to mess with searching on line. They may do a “favorites” (team, class, food, song etc) power point and in Fourth grade they do a Florida one. Something I do in the media center is design some question and answers based on our collection and using the Destiny Search. I have them search with reading levels etc. and sometimes they need to find out how many titles an author has, do we have a book on French cooking, are there any non-fiction books on ….and so one. AT the third grade level I would do a long demo , have them do it in front of the class, then review the next time they come in and turn them loose. I let them work as pairs too. -- Laura Lott Library Media Specialist Tallassee Elementary School Tallassee, AL libitz012@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
