I saved this message because I wanted to read the article in my "quiet,
contemplative" time on Saturday morning. It really made me think about some
things are important to me. Thank you Thomas for sending your message to share
the article.

I realized as I read the article with the references to "reading books makes us
smarter" and "reading raises test scores" and "Internet use might be detrimental
to children" and "the lack of focus our society has" that I recognize these
arguments. I experienced these arguments when I was in High School, and I
revisited them when my children were born in the 80's. When my children were
small I wondered if private education or home schooling would be better for them
than public education. For me the arguments are all about "How do you get the
best education possible?"

I understand now that you get an education by taking the best advantage of what
is put before you. That is just what the American Dream is supposed to be
about. Do you have books at home? Read them and you will become smarter. Do
you have a school library with a quality collection of books and resources? Use
it and you will become smarter. Do you utilized the public library and all the
myriad resources available to you? You will become smarter. Do you "play" on
the Internet or do you use it as a tool to provide for your information needs?
You know what I'll say next.

Education is experiencing plenty of tough issues right now, but it's been that
way for as long as I can remember. I have found that when I effectively use the
resources I have to gain knowledge, experience, or even influence in the end I
am better than when I started. So, yeah I agree "The medium is the medium."
And, it is ours to do with as we choose. We can choose to become better or not.

Information doesn’t deserve to be free. It is an abstract tool; a useful
fantasy, a nothing. It is nonexistent until and unless a person experiences
it in a useful way. --Jaron Lanier
