I have been sedentary all my life. I don't enjoy sports and find exercise machines to be insufferably boring. However, six months ago I discovered walking and have built myself up to five miles per day, five or six times per week. I love it. Even in the cold weather, it feels good to get out and breathe outside air. I get cranky on days that I can't go out. So, I know I have finally found something that works for me. I have lost 16 pounds, improved both kinds of cholesterol, lowered my blood pressure, and virtually cured a 40+ year back problem. For no apparent reason, I woke up about a week ago with severe pain in one knee. It has been diagnosed as arthritis. Seems odd that it would come on so suddenly. I am doing pt twice a week and the exercises really help. The therapist seems a little negative about my continuing to walk. He is pushing gym membership and particularly the stationary bike as an alternative. I know I will not do it. And I am afraid of a real bike as I am not coordinated. The best exercise is the one you will do. And walking is what I will do. So...here is the question. I talked to the therapist and have researched online and gotten a variety of conflicting answers. Is it better to do stretching exercises a) before going out for a walk b) after walking slowly for 5 minutes, or c) after finishing the walk? Naturally I will not start walking again until I can walk without pain, which should be in about three weeks, judging by how quickly the knee has improved so far. I appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks for your always generous responses!
