A colleague is moving to middle school where she will be teaching social studies to students in an eighth grade special education class. She is looking for picture books, historical fiction and nonfiction to align with the NY state social studies curriculum (basically US history post-Civil War to present day). She has been told that the reading level of her students is between 2nd and 4th grade. She is hoping to find some books that students will be able to read themselves and others that she might read aloud but that wouldn't be above the comprehension levels of her students. Her wish is to find books that will provide background knowledge of different events in American history since the Civil War. Some specific topics include: reconstruction, westward expansion, WWI and WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, etc. I (and my colleague) would truly appreciate any suggestions you might offer. Thanks in advance.
