I am the librarian at a charter school, and we have had a library
as long as the school has had a central location. We will be
entering our 14th year when school begins next month. Our
charter status has allowed us a lot of freedom to meet the needs
of diverse learners. We still follow state and national
standards, so our students are receiving a well-balanced
curriculum. One cannot judge all schools on how some teachers
manage, or don't manage, their classrooms. I have worked in
traditional schools where teachers had no management skills and
let their classrooms "run amuck". Our administration is
committed to what is best for the students and will step in when
a situation like that occurs instead of letting our students
suffer.

Because we are a charter school, we do not have to maintain a
central office and are able to budget more funds to reach
individual student needs. I am pleased to say the library is a
priority for us. Charter schools may not be the answer for every
child, but don't judge all charter schools by the behavior of the
teachers in one.

Thank you,

Sandi Prescott, Librarian-NBCT
